KUALA LUMPUR – The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) handed head coach B. Sathianathan the vote of confidence despite the Tigers’ disappointing showing at the AFF Suzuki Cup.

Malaysia crashed out of South East Asia’s showcase tournament at the group stage following defeats to Vietnam (3-2) and co-hosts Thailand (3-0) but following a meeting chaired by FAM President Sultan Ahmad Shah, Sathianathan was offered an extension to his current contract.

"The committee (for the national team) felt that it was not fair for Sathianathan to be evaluated based on the team's performance in the Suzuki AFF Cup given that it has not been a year since he was national coach," FAM Vice President, Khairy Jamaluddin told Bernama News Agency.

Jamaluddin added that the situation will be reviewed after the 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers in January, when Malaysia opens their Group C campaign against the UAE while a committee would also be established to decide whether or not another coach will take the helm of the U-23s for next December’s SEA Games in Laos.
