KUALA LUMPUR: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) on Friday threatened to suspend the prestigious Malaysia Cup if more match-fixing cases crop up, a day after seven players of the Malaysian Super League’s Sarawak team were detained for alleged match-fixing.

FAM Vice-President Khairy Jamaluddin said the Malaysia Cup which is scheduled for a June kick-off would be off and the Inter-Continental Cup U-23 tournament (May 15-25) would also be cancelled, while confirming that police had launched an investigation into match-rigging allegations against the Sarawak team and the Police FA.

“We are declaring all-out war against corruption in football even if it means overhauling the entire system,” said Jamaluddin.

“If investigations indicate match-fixing is rampant, we do not rule out taking drastic measures, including suspending the Malaysia Cup,” added the FAM official.

The FAM has also appointed General Secretary Azzuddin Ahmad as head of a taskforce which will assist the anti-corruption agency and police in their investigations.

Sarawak are at the bottom of the 13-team standings on 14 points with two matches left and coach Kunju Jamaluddin's side has only a slender chance of avoiding the drop. Kedah have already been crowned the champions.
