KUALA LUMPUR: AFC has supported the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM)’s call to root out corruption from the Malaysian game.

Noting the recent developments in Malaysian football when several Malaysian Super League players were detained and investigated for alleged match-fixing, AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam commended the efforts undertaken by the FAM and the state investigation agencies.

“AFC is of the firm view that all forms of corruption in the Asian game need to be completely rooted out and the game has to be kept clean,” said Bin Hammam, welcoming the setting-up of a task force by FAM to propose measures to fight the evil.

“The FAM proved in the nineties that it was capable of taking tough measures against match-fixing and AFC is confident that it will succeed again in restoring the integrity of the game.”

“I call on all players and officials to reject corruption and all unethical practices and play the game in its true spirit,” concluded the AFC chief.

Several Malaysian Super League players were detained last week in connection with investigations into match-fixing allegations, prompting the FAM to set up a high-level panel to help the investigating agencies.
